Artist Submissions

(Updated 8 April 2009)

Thank you for your interest.

Submissions to Jz Club, Shanghai &/or Jz Club Hangzhou

Artist submission deadline for Jz Club: Approximately 6 months in advance of intended performance date.

Festival submissions for the 4th annual Jz Shanghai Music Festival
October 16th to 18th, 2009.

Artist submission deadline for festival: Thursday April 30th 2009.

Due to the high volume of submissions, it is not possible to return them. All submissions should be addressed to:

Mark Elliott Jz Group
4th Floor, Building 12, Lane 280 Wukang Road
Shanghai 200031, CHINA
tel: +86 21 64311075
email: [email protected]

Musicians should submit their materials (see below) with a cover letter.

Except for headline artists, applications without flight support will rarely be considered.

Due to the limitations of our programming at the festival and the club, it isn't possible to accommodate everyone with a gig. Only the successful applicants will be contacted.

All submissions should contain the following:

1. A "playable" CD or CDR.
We can only consider those artists that have sent a "PLAYABLE" CD or CDR of their music. We prefer not to download or audition samples from any websites. (Especially since the internet in China is often too slow to stream music)

2. The CD jewel case must be clearly labeled on spine.

3. A brief synopsis of your music (eg. a mix of standards and originals influenced by Thelonious Monk, Sun Ra and Miles Davis). Please include 1 or 2 press clippings if available.

4. A list of all group members' names and instruments.

5. A CLEAR & READABLE scan/photocopy of the passport of each band member and each person travelling (e.g. tour manager, sound engineer). The passports must be valid beyond 6 months of the date for application of the visa to enter China (application is usually made within 4 weeks of travel). This is a necessary requirement for a Chinese visa.

6. A 45 minute video (DVD format only). This MUST feature all the band members who will play in China. It need not be professional quality, but the band members should be clearly visible. Do not send your only copy, it will not be returned. This is required to apply for a music license and will not be used for any other purpose.

Please note that applications without a DVD and passport copies will still be accepted, but if we receive the materials all in one go, we'll really like you and probably want to help make your life easier too. If there are reasons why passports and DVD cannot be included, please explain in the cover letter together with an estimated date when they can be provided.

7. Contact details!
Name/ contact: phone/ fax/ e-mail/ web site/ mailing address of contact person.

Usually you should submit materials 2 months before you wish to receive a reply. Minimum time is 3 weeks, but we can't guarantee such fast turn around.

(We have house bands playing 7 nights a week, and we usually don't book in special guest bands on Friday or Saturday nights. Usual bookings in the club are for 1 night only, and we usually only book 2-3 bands per month - so apply early!)
