The clarinet of Joachim Badenhorst casts a spell. Yes, he is a master of creative music. Yes, he has embraced the avant-garde. But it is his singular mystical voice, which is even more compelling. Badenhorst’s compositions each posit the existence of a different musical world. Sometimes it is a pastoral line, sometimes an obsessive rhythmic figure. And other times a wry bluesy take on abstract, Webern-esque miniatures. There are tender waltzes and gutsy, driving motor rhythms. The musicians who travel with Badenhorst embrace these diversions and make them their own.

Of course, Badenhorst is a master of the clarinet and of the bass clarinet, but it is his musical dreams, which embrace the listener. He draws on the great themes of western music, and transmutes them into a spooky daydream, rich with song and vibrant forward motion. Peter Scherr will play bass with Joachim this time, and it is his great pleasure to enter these fantastical musical worlds. Chris Trzcinski, a long time colleague of Scherr, and one of the finest drummers in the Shanghai scene will lend his vivid imagination and sure, empathetic touch to the group, giving the music fire and a cohesive center.
